Steve Allen, head of the Birmingham office at Mills & Reeve examines how City law firms are expanding in the UK regions instead of turning offshore to countries such as India and South Africa. Mr Allen cites the recently announced recruitment drive undertaken by Hogan Lovells in Birmingham and notes how Allen & Overy, Herbert Smith Freehills, Ashurst, Simmons & Simmons and Nabarro are among those who have done something similar, albeit in other regional centres. Mr Allen points out that although regional offshoots often start small, “once the partners down south get used to the idea that there is intelligent life north of Watford - they can snowball.” Allen & Overy’s Belfast office and that of Trowers & Hamlins in Birmingham are cited as examples.
