Reflections on Umunna's Tribunal pledge

Posted By: James

The Telegraph’s Alan Tovey reports on industry views following Chuka Umunna’s pledge to abolish what Labour calls the "unfair" employment tribunal system. Fraser Younson, employment partner at Squire Patton Boggs, said constancy is required to ensure employers know how to treat staff and warns against a “wishy-washy arbitration system of loose discussion where decisions depend on how the person in charge feels on the day”. The CIPD and employment lawyers said there could be improvements to the system, especially to the level of fees, which they agreed restricted access to justice, but tribunals could also have the power to weed out weak claims early on.
