Analysis of ONS figures by the TaxPayers' Alliance has found that the poorest 10% of households pay 47% of their gross income (£3,875 a year) in direct and indirect taxes while the wealthiest 10% of households (earning an average of £104,000 a year) paid an average of 35% of their gross income in taxes. The study found that middle class families (earning £32,108 a year) give the Treasury £274 more every year than they get back from the state while the top 10% of households pay £30,023 more in taxes than they receive in state services.
