National police chiefs have called on the government to change employment law to allow them to force an increase in officer diversity in large towns and cities. Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe is pushing for a temporary change in the law to allow the Met to recruit minority officers in equal numbers to white males for a "set period of time" to reflect London's diverse population and ease racial tensions with the public.
