Oxbridge remains key route to the Bar
A survey undertaken by the Bar Council and the Bar Standards Board shows there are more Oxbridge-educated barristers than ever before with 45% of young barristers qualified in the past three years going to Oxbridge, up from 35% two years ago. More than one third of senior barristers in private practice are QCs and nearly 80% of them went to a private school, studied at Oxbridge and achieved a first. “The old school tie has made a difference, independent of any indicator of merit,” Richard Moorhead, professor of law and professional ethics at University College London, said. “With serious problems at both ends of the profession, not all of which can be blamed on legal aid cuts, the recruitment and promotion practices at the Bar remain a serious impediment to a diverse judiciary.”
