A new report from the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission has warned that Britain remains “deeply elitist”, with privately educated pupils and Oxbridge graduates continuing to dominate the top roles in society. The report found that many of the nation’s judges, politicians, armed forces chiefs, journalists, TV executives and public officials attended fee-paying schools before studying at Oxford or Cambridge. The committee has called for disadvantaged students from less prestigious universities to be fast-tracked into leading professions to correct the bias. Alan Milburn, the committee’s chair, added that companies should be forced to publish data on the social background of their staff to encourage them to widen their mix.
