The Times reports that senior Conservatives are calling for an emergency change in the law following suggestions that 1.5m people who are not British nationals will have the power to swing the general election. Under an obscure law, people from Ireland and the Commonwealth who live in the UK are given voting rights, with Irish, Indian and Pakistani citizens topping the list of those allowed to cast a vote. Liam Fox, the former defence secretary, said: "It is ridiculous that the government of a country like ours could be decided by those who are not British citizens."
