The Conservatives are drawing up new laws aimed at preventing teachers and other public sector workers from going on strike. If the party wins next year's General Election, workers will be prevented from triggering industrial action based on the votes of just a small hard core of union activists. Instead, union leaders will have to prove that half of their membership supports the walkout - or that a large proportion of members have voted. Otherwise it will be illegal. A senior Conservative source stated: “It is wrong for workers in vital public services such as schools to be able to walk out when the majority of members have not voted to do so. We hope this will put an end to nearly all public sector strikes.”
