In a speech to the Bar Council of Northern Ireland and Ireland, Lord Neuberger, the President of the Supreme Court, said poorly drafted laws were bringing parliament and the rule of law into disrepute. Lord Neuberger warned of the growing complexity of the law in almost every field and that increased specialisation by lawyers had been a challenge to those practising law. Lord Neuberger also referred to moves to liberalise the legal market and diversity among the judiciary. The Evening Standard takes up Lord Neuberger’s comments on the Proceeds of Crime Act, which he said was undermining efforts by prosecutors to confiscate criminals’ ill-gotten gains in a number of high profile cases as “sophistications and occasional corruptions in the international financial community” made it often impossible to trace the proceeds of crime. His comments came in a ruling on Shakeel Ahmad and Syed Ahmed, who made £12.6m from a VAT fraud in 2002 and have refused to pay any money back.
