Lord Tebbit has said there "may well have been" a political cover-up of child sex abuse in the 1980s after it emerged that the Home Office could not locate 114 potentially relevant files. A review into events surrounding the lost files will now be carried out by a senior legal figure from outside Whitehall. Alison Millar of Leigh Day, which is representing some of the victims of alleged child abuse, said it was now "an absolute necessity" that there was an independent inquiry into the allegations. Meanwhile, Nick Clegg says that more resources should be devoted to the investigation after it emerged that there were only seven detectives working on the cases.
