London’s top law firms “out of step with the modern world”

A report from London business advisory group Skarbek Associates has warned that law firms which do not increase efforts to assist women in working their way up to top posts will be “overtaken” by rivals who do. The report warns that many firms’ “organisational culture” still inhibits women who are eyeing top jobs, and that this had led to companies becoming “out of step with the modern world”. It notes that just one in five of full equity partners at the capital’s top 10 law firms are female. Among practices which prevent women from reaching top positions are hourly billing, which focuses on the amount of time spent on work rather than its quality, alongside a failure to promote “flexible working practices in a genuine way”.
