Leveson advocates greater use of technology to cut court costs
Sir Brian Leveson, president of the Queen's Bench Division, has said that modernising the courts was a once-in-a-generation opportunity that could save the government "very substantial amounts of money". He said the process of enabling defendants in certain cases to plead guilty online is only the beginning of changes which could see more low-level work resolved without a formal court hearing, saving processing costs. His comments, which follow Michael Gove’s speech in which he urged the implementation of recommendations made by Sir Brian earlier this year, were given a degree of support from lawyers. Richard Miller, head of legal aid at the Law Society, and Jonathan Black, president of the London Criminal Court Solicitors Association, both said an online plea system could work in many cases, but urged caution where mitigating circumstances were available
