Landmark ruling could see airline claims increase

Airlines will have to pay out compensation for lengthy flight delays caused by technical faults, following a landmark court ruling. Budget airline Jet2 had taken the case to the Court of Appeal after a judge initially ruled in favour of a Stockport man whose flight from Manchester to Malaga in 2011 was delayed by 27 hours because of a wiring defect. The ruling could have a dramatic effect upon the number of claims for which airlines have to pay out, as flight operators will now be liable to pay compensation for delays caused by a technical fault that would not be picked up in routine checks. Richard Lloyd, the executive director of Which?, said: "This ruling shows that airlines cannot avoid ducking their responsibilities
