An immigration judge has resigned from his role as a district judge after making a racist remark about a crime victim. Richard Hollingworth suggested that harassment victim Deepa Patel would inevitably be employed in a shop or off-licence because of her ethnic background. Upon hearing his remarks, prosecutor Rachel Parker withdrew from the case, telling the judge: “I am professionally embarrassed. I cannot prosecute this case.” After the case the CPS lodged a complaint against Mr Hollingworth, with the judge resigning the same day. Miss Patel, who has in fact completed a law degree, responded: “I was born and bred in this country... it's shocking and disgusting for anyone to say that, especially a judge.”
