Chris Grayling has defended reforms to the employment tribunal system, saying the changes were “necessary” to stop businesses from being threatened by “disaffected employees”. Claimants at employment tribunals now incur an upfront cost of either £400 or £1,200, depending on the complexity of the case - a development that has led to a 70% reduction in claims. "For someone to go to a tribunal there should be some degree of hurdle for them to cross," said the justice secretary. It has been reported that there has been a drop of between 70 and 80% in the volume of Tribunal claims issued since the fees came into force suggesting that many thousands of potential claimants with genuine claims are being denied access to justice.
