Scotland now has a record number of solicitors practising in the country. Membership statistics released by the Law Society show there are now more than 11,000 – one for every 500 people in Scotland. The body also said increasing numbers of women are entering the profession, accounting for 49% of solicitors overall. Amongst younger professionals the difference is greater - 61% of lawyers under the age of 45 are female, and there are now two-and-a-half times as many female solicitors aged between 25 and 30 compared to men. Christine McLintock, vice-president of the Law Society of Scotland, commented: "It's taken quite a while to get to this stage, but if you look even at the last six years, the pace of change has really escalated."
