European crackdown on internet giants

Posted By: James

The European Parliament has voted overwhelmingly in favour of breaking up Google and other internet search engines. Lawmakers have passed a resolution that will pressure the EU’s competition watchdog to split internet search engines from other services offered by internet companies. It comes despite a warning from the US Congress earlier this week that the measure would unduly influence a long-running EU competition investigation into Google. Separately, social networking firms are being told to make it clearer to members how they collect and use their data. A report by the Commons Science and Technology Select Committee says the firms' terms and conditions are far too long and complex, and that users may not be aware of how their details can be used by websites and apps.
