Culture secretary Sajid Javid has warned that terrorists and criminals are exploiting the “right to be forgotten” ruling by the ECJ in order to remove details of their activities and trials from web search engines. “Since Luxembourg’s unelected judges created the so-called right to be forgotten, Google has been receiving a demand for deletion every 90 seconds… from people who, for one reason or another, would prefer their pasts to be kept secret,” he stated. In the speech, at a Society of Editors conference, Mr Javid also pledged to crack down on police and other authorities using the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act to “hamper and hinder legitimate reporting” by using its powers to access journalists’ telephone records.
