The LGA has claimed that “frivolous” compensation claims from “ambulance-chasing” lawyers are bleeding councils coffers dry. The cost of payouts related to roads being in poor condition last year was £31.6m, while payouts cost schools £2.7m. Councils were faced a further £6m cost from legal fees associated with compensation claims. Peter Fleming, chairman of LGA's Improvement Board, said: “It is right compensation is made available to people with genuine cases. But there is a minority of opportunistic lawyers leeching away money that would be better spent improving schools and fixing our roads. The Government needs an overhaul of the system.” An editorial in the Express states that Britain is paying a high price for our new blame culture.
