The chairman of the Bar Council, Nicholas Lavender, QC, has said that the fall in civil litigation in the wake of legal aid cuts has been worse than the Government predicted. Mr Lavender said that the number of social welfare cases that received legal aid had fallen by 80% since 2009-10. He added: “Legal aid provided help in 205,617 new family cases in 2012/13 but only 42,798 in 2013/14.”
