Challenges and opportunities for trainees - but do we really need any more lawyers?

The Times contains a supplement, Student Law, exploring various aspects of the industry. It highlights some of the scholarship opportunities available to students - including those on offer from the Law Society, the University of Law, and BPP School of Law. The Pathways to Law programme, which aims to give bright teenagers from non-privileged backgrounds the confidence to pursue a career in law, is also profiled. However, it is also reported that the number of students applying for postgraduate law school places has fallen by nearly 40% since the financial market crash six years ago, with figures from the body administering online applications for the graduate diploma in law (GDL) and the legal practice course (LPC) illustrating the devastating impact of the recession on law schools. According to the Central Applications Board for England and Wales, 4,000 fewer students - a drop of 37% - applied for an LPC place this year compared with 2008-09. In the same period, applications for the GDL fell by 38%, from 5,980 to 3,690.
