The BBC’s annual accounts reveal that the broadcaster spent £25.6m in severance payments to staff in 2013-14. This compares with £40.2m for the year before. A BBC spokesman said: “The report clearly shows severance payments have declined since Tony Hall introduced a cap on them in September 2013.” However, Jonathan Isaby, of the Tax-Payers' Alliance, said: “There are legal requirements to make redundancy payments but some of the pay-outs at the top end will strike taxpayers as excessive.”
